Petition regarding the stolen firearms of the SAPS

May 16, 2016 deur afriministrator

The South African Police Service (SAPS) central firearms registry reported a total of 3 026 police firearms between January 2009 and 30 June 2014 as lost. These figures were acquired by AfriForum after a PAIA application was submitted to the SAPS’s asset management division. Government acts stricter to limit legal weapon ownership, but these figures show that important governmental institutions do not even have control themselves over firearms registered to them.

Important information that AfriForum now requests is among other the number of firearms that have been reported stolen and/or lost, as well as the type of firearm. AfriForum will soon appear in Court in a bid to compel the SAPS central firearms registry to release the information.
