Municipality closed for 3 months, officials still draw salaries

May 30, 2014 deur Esmarie Prinsloo

AfriForum has instituted urgent legal measures against the Tswaing Local Municipality after reports that the Municipality, which is supposed to provide services to Sannieshof in the North-West, has been closed for the past 3 months.

According to Carmea Huysamen, Provincial Coordinator for AfriForum in the North-West, no services are provided, but the municipal officials still receive salaries.

“This is blatant mismanagement. Municipalities are obliged to provide services in terms of the Constitution. It is unacceptable that residents are left in the lurch in this way. Urgent intervention is necessary,” Huysamen said.

Residents of Sannieshof are now compelled to travel to neighbouring towns to get services.

AfriForum has instituted legal steps to resolve the situation as soon as possible.
