Municipal Manager walks out of valuation roll meeting

May 6, 2015 deur Mariska Batt

The Municipal Manager of the Masilonyana Local Municipality, Sipho Mtakati, abruptly walked out of an important meeting regarding the problematic valuation roll.

“We were busy discussing proposals when Mr Mtakati told me he was leaving. After I immediately told him that he can’t leave yet since we are still busy with the meeting, he repeated that he was going to and got up and left,” said Johann Hattingh, Provincial Coordinator for AfriForum in the Western Free State.

During the meeting Hattingh explained that the valuation roll is not valid since it does not, amongst other things, adhere to legal legislation. According to Hattingh, Mtakati also admitted that the valuation roll does not meet all the correct requirements.

“The meeting has brought us nowhere thanks to the no-care attitude the Municipality has towards their responsibilities and the community,” said Piet Kotze, Chairperson of the AfriForum Branch in Winburg.

AfriForum requested the Municipality to submit proof that valuation roll was compiled in accordance with the correct legal legislative requirements by 30 April. However, no feedback has been received yet.

AfriForum received a mandate from the community to take legal action on their behalf and the organisation will be meeting with their legal representatives to discuss further steps.
