Lekwa Local Municipality must take responsibility

The AfriForum branch in Standerton on 27 March 2017 directed a letter to David Mabuza, Premier of Mpumalanga, S.P.D. Sikhosana, MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs for Mpumalanga, as well as Linda Tshabalala, Municipal Manager of the Lekwa Local Municipality. This follows after the local branch attempted  since January 2017, without any success, to arrange a meeting with the Municipal Manager.

“AfriForum seeks answers from the Municipal Manager, because the manner in which the Municipality disregards the inputs of the community, as well as the manner in which the Municipality fails to comply with its obligations, are unacceptable,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for Mpumalanga West.

“We attempted several times to arrange a meeting with the Municipal Manager, but each time arrived in front of closed doors. We therefore have no other option than to send the letter to the Premier, as well as the MEC,” says Leon Enslin, Chairperson of the AfriForum branch in Standerton.

“AfriForum also pointed out various problem areas to the Municipality and we expect Tshabalala to take responsibility for it. If the Municipality does not address these problems, AfriForum will assist the community in the form of do-it-yourself projects,” concludes Coetzer.
