AfriForum’s Waverley branch creates safety risk awareness

On Friday 27 July the AfriForum branch in Waverley held a safety risk awareness initiative in cooperation with the Moot Community Initiative as well as other role-players in this Pretoria suburb.

This follows after an increase in crime under the highway bridge in Bosloerie Street. Workers in the Waverley area underway to their respective jobs frequently make use of this route underneath the bridge and have recently been targeted by thieves.

“We handed out a pamphlet (printed in four different languages in order for most people to understand the information) as well as whistles to the workers. The whistles can be used when any of the workers feel threatened,” says Hendrik van der Westhuizen, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Waverley branch.

“This is not the end of our involvement in this area. We also plan to hold a clean-up operation soon and to install palisades and CCTV cameras,” concludes Van der Westhuizen.

“Waverley is the perfect example of how the whole community takes responsibility and works in unison to achieve progress in their community,” says Tiaan Oosthuizen, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Gauteng North.
