AfriForum’s East Rand branches oppose street and building name changes

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality plans to implement proposed name changes with regard to various streets and buildings in and around the East Rand. AfriForum’s East Rand branches are opposed to this intended decision because these changes will amount to millions of rand and the taxpayer will simply have to foot the bill. This boils down to a total misappropriation of funds which could have been spent on other essential services.

“Die Metro is planning to implement approximately 59 name changes to streets and buildings on the East Rand and the public participation meetings already took place on 12, 13 and 14 March 2019 in Katlehong, Tembisa and Tsakane. The dates were given to the public on short notice and hampers community members’ right to properly take part in the public participation process,” says Marie Naude, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.

AfriForum has already launched a petition to which approximately 200 people have added their complaints. The public has until 3 April 2019 to submit their commentary by sending an email to Hendrick Boya at hendrick.boya@ekurhuleni.gov.za.

AfriForum encourages the public to actively become part and take a stand against this. Add your name to the complaint: http://bit.ly/2OivFf3.
