AfriForum receives confirmation about renewal of firearm licences

AfriForum received a letter today in which Bheki Cele, Minister of Police, confirms that the applications by firearm owners whose 90-day-period to renew their firearm licences expires during the lockdown will be accepted after the lockdown and that these application will not be compromised.

This follows a letter by AfriForum on 25 March 2020 to the Minister and  Gen. Khehla Sitole, National Police Commissioner, in which the civil rights organisation raised its concern that firearm owners would not be able to renew their firearm licences in time as a result of the lockdown.

Brig. Lawrence Nkgweng confirmed receipt of the letter on 8 April and undertook to give it the necessary attention.

“AfriForum views this confirmation as a victory for all firearm owners who are affected by the lockdown and will monitor the situation continuously,” says  Marnus Kamfer, Legal and Risk Manager at AfriForum.
