AfriForum’s Helderberg Basin branch thanks foreperson for excellent waste management and service

June 12, 2019 deur Carina Bester

On Monday 10 June 2019 the civil rights organisation AfriForum handed a certificate to Endriena Johnson, foreperson of the Gordon’s Bay Solid Waste Drop-off Facility, and praised her for her excellent service and management of this site. The organisation also surprised the workers of the site with pizza and refreshments for lunch.

This follows after AfriForum conducted a national landfill site audit earlier this year during which 127 landfill sites were audited. In the Western Cape three sites stood out especially, the Gordon’s Bay Solid Waste Drop-off Facility being one of the three.

Strict access control is applied at this site and waste is inspected at the gate to ensure that it is acceptable and checked once more before it is unloaded. Waste that is not acceptable is referred to the Athlone Refuse Transfer Station (individuals) or the Vissershok Waste Management Facility (businesses).

“It is important for me to lead through my example, to make sure that my team feels appreciated and knows that I trust them. It keeps my team motivated. I work with my team and I always try to help where I can, for example, at the gate with security should there be a shortage of staff,” says Johnson.

“It is truly encouraging to see how Johnson manages the site and her staff. She is an example for many others and sets a very high standard for her landfill site. She should therefore receive recognition for the contribution she makes to the community,” says Deon de Jager, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Boland region.
