AfriForum welcomes sentence of convicted farm murderer

AfriForum welcomes the life sentencing of Jan Esterhuise, a farm worker from Sutherland, on 8 July 2019.

Esterhuise was found guilty of Riana Louw du Toit’s murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, after he stoned her to death on the roadside between Sutherland and Merweville on 6 February 2018.

“We welcome the heaviest possible sentence for violent deeds such as this. We also believe that strict sentences can serve as deterrent for potential criminals,” says Johandré van Zyl, AfriForum’s Head of Safety for the Southern Region.

The court found that Esterhuise showed no remorse for his actions. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Du Toit and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances. The sentences will be served consecutively.
