AfriForum wants to curb crime in Worcester

May 30, 2014 deur Esmarie Prinsloo

AfriForum received several requests and complaints from concerned residents of Worcester regarding the increase in crime, especially theft and break-ins in the town. The civil rights organisation is now planning on establishing a branch in Worcester to tackle, amongst others, escalating crime.

“The community is at their wit’s end. Crime affects everyone and the SAPS cannot curb it alone, members of the community should unite and work together to make Worcester a safer place. The more members we have, the more we can do,” said Stefan Pretorius, Provincial Coordinator for AfriForum in the Western Cape.

AfriForum supports communities across South Africa in establishing neighbourhood watches, in strengthening existing neighbourhood watches, organising of patrols and providing equipment. The organisation has the knowledge and capacity to establish effective community safety networks in towns.

“We have started in the past month to establish safety structures in Western Cape towns. We donated a golf cart earlier this month to the Uilenkraalsmond neighbourhood watch to strengthen their capabilities in the fight against crime,” Pretorius said.
