Go Green Knysna

Go Green Knysna is an initiative that AfriForum’s environmental affairs division proudly supports. It aims to rehabilitate the areas in and around Knysna after the recent devastating fires. The Garden Route, of which Knysna forms part, is renowned for its natural beauty and attracts thousands of tourists every year.

This rehabilitation project aims to plant trees and shrubs in cooperation with other stakeholders to help restore the area to its former glory.

The area’s natural fauna and flora is not only breathtakingly beautiful but also plays a very important role in combatting erosion, especially water erosion. With the rainy season just around the corner, the project’s role-players will also be involved in restoring natural habitat. This will result in the prevention of future mud slides and flooding as far as possible.

Ten of the most important functions of trees include:

  1. Producing oxygen: A fully-grown green tree produces enough oxygen in one season to allow ten people to breath for one year.
  2. Controlling the speed of storm water: Floods can be prevented significantly by planting trees.
  3. Preventing noise: Trees mute city noise just as efficiently as stone walls.
  4. Removing toxins: Trees clean up the soil by absorbing certain dangerous chemicals and other pollutants in the soil.
  5. Storing carbon dioxide: Trees absorbs carbon dioxide to produce food (carbon dioxide is the most important contributor to climate change).
  6. Providing shade: Trees are a welcome source of coolness during the hot summer months.
  7. Serving as wind shields: Trees absorb the power of strong winds in winter.
  8. Preventing soil erosion: Tree roots bond the soil while leaves minimise the power of wind blowing over open areas.
  9. Being part of the great ecosystem: The interaction between trees and other organisms plays an important role in the continued existence of the ecosystem.
  10. A source of food: Trees are the main source of food for numerous animals, birds and organisms.
