  • 2010 07 12 – AfriForum will consider legal action if Eskom cuts off electricity supply to Free State towns

AfriForum is considering taking legal action in order to actively join the battle to keep the lights on in 11 municipalities in the Free State. This comes after AfriForum had already lodged a complaint with the Public Protector and requested an investigation into the reasons for the crisis regarding continued power supply to these municipalities by Eskom.

Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg, AfriForum spokesperson on local government, said that since poor municipal management is to blame for the current situation, Eskom cannot punish the residents who are paying their bills conscientiously.

AfriForum sent a letter to its members in these towns, asking them to contact AfriForum. In the letter AfriForum indicates that other residents and institutions, such as old-age homes, in these municipal areas would also be supported by AfriForum and that all should therefore get in touch with AfriForum. “We need as many members of the community as possible to stand up against Eskom’s planned action,” Jansen van Rensburg said.

AfriForum has just launched a new link on its website (www.afriforum.co.za): Free State Electricity Crisis. Members of the public who could suffer damages due to the looming interruption of power supply, are invited to record their details via the website. The aim of the campaign is to identify as many people as possible who could be affected by such power cuts, and to act on their behalf.

“Local communities must start cooperating more closely and call the management of local municipalities to account for their actions,” Jansen van Rensburg said.
