2012 11 19 – AfriForum: municipality to recover wasted money

In a letter, civil rights organisation AfriForum has requested the mayor, the speaker and the municipal manager of Mkhondo municipality to recover all the money wasted in purchasing various items at grossly inflated prices.

‘Money is being wasted and nobody is held accountable. This is completely unacceptable. The law is clear on this: the money must be recovered from the liable parties in their personal capacity. If the municipality refuses to recover the money from the liable parties, we will approach the courts for an order instructing it to do so. The legal fees will also be billed to the municipality, to be recovered from the party responsible for not cooperating in his or her personal capacity,’ Tommy Ferreira, chairperson of AfriForum Piet Retief said.

AfriForum has given the municipality 10 days to submit an action plan on how it intends to recover the wasted money.
