2012 10 03 – Stop the Murders: AfriForum distributes memorandum about farm murders to 110 embassies and international institutions

Stop-the-Murders

Tomorrow, AfriForum will address a memorandum to 110 embassies and international institutions in which the civil rights organisation calls on the international community to put diplomatic pressure on the South African government to address the issue of farm murders. Each memorandum will be accompanied by a copy of the book, Land of Sorrow (English version of Treurgrond), as well as the documentary about farm murders, War of the Flea.

A copy of the memorandum, as well as the book and DVD, will be presented to a representative of President Jacob Zuma at the Union Buildings.

Ernst Roets, deputy CEO of AfriForum, explained that this action is part of AfriForum’s Stop the Murders campaign. ‘Our final goal is to convince the government to declare farm murders a priority crime and to implement specialist units for rural safety. This action aims to notify the international community of a catastrophe which is swept under the carpet by our own government.

AfriForum’s research team drew up the list of international organisations. The focus was specifically on countries and institutions who are not yet aware of the problem and who could possibly put pressure on the South African government. A number of international media companies were also identified.

The complete list of institutions is attached.

The details of the occasion are as follows:

Date:              Thursday, 4 October 2012
