The civil rights organisation AfriForum is the first applicant in the court struggle to attempt to gain an interdict to force various state departments, including the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, to present a rehabilitation plan to AfriForum, different business owners and the court for the maintenance of Pilgrim’s Rest as well as upgrading the town from a provincial heritage site to a national heritage site.

The court documents have already been drafted and will be served to the state departments involved soon.

‘It is very disappointing that communities are increasingly forced to approach the court to force the state to perform their duties,’ Ivan Herselman, AfriForum’s organiser for Mpumalanga, said.
