AfriForum Youth and the Potgietersrus District Agricultural Union (DAU) will roll up their sleeves and oil their braai tongs in an attempt to improve on last year’s world-record length boerewors of 514,5 metres at this year’s Windpomp Festival in Mookgophong (Naboomspruit). At the same time, AfirForum will attempt to improve on the world record for the longest uninterrupted braai. The current record of 32 hours is held by Mr Vito Polera, in partnership with Fruit and Veg City and the Foodlover’s Market in Cape Town. The aim of the braai marathon is to raise awareness of the importance of mother-tongue education among South Africans.
“We, the youth of South Africa, must celebrate our heritage, and AfriForum Youth and the DAU will do so by braaiing a 550 metre-long boerewors,” Ian Cameron, spokesperson for AfriForum Youth, said.
The 514,5 metre-long boerewors that was braaied at the Windpomp Festival in 2011 shattered the previous record of 321 metres. The boerewors weighed approximately 420kg and the combined effort of 40 people was needed to get it onto the grills.
Cameron said they were looking forward to smashing the record again. The attempt to break the previous record will symbolise cooperation between various organisations to achieve a common goal.
“The attempt to break another record by braaiing wors for more than 32 consecutive hours will coincide with a fundraising effort aimed at protecting Afrikaans schools against the government’s onslaught. We want to show how serious we are about the braai tradition and how important Afrikaans education is to us as young people,” Charl Oberholzer, National Chairman of AfriForum Youth, said.
“Individuals and companies are urged to sponsor an hour of the attempt to break this record. All proceeds will go towards the legal costs of AfriForum’s Red Afrikaans Schools campaign,” Oberholzer added.
The campaign was launched after three Afrikaans-medium schools in Fochville in North West had been forced by the Gauteng Department of Basic Education to take in groups of English-speaking pupils at the beginning of the 2012 school year, regardless of whether or not the pupils could be accommodated elsewhere.
Individuals or companies who want to sponsor an hour of the record attempt can send an e-mail to jeug@afriforum.co.za. Meat and wors that are left over after the braai will be donated to charity.
